PCB chief calls for ‘major surgery’

The Pakistan Cricket Board chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, strongly criticized the team management following Pakistan's narrow six-run loss to arch-rivals India in the T20 World Cup, indicating the need for significant changes, according to a report by the Press Trust of India news agency on Monday.

In the match held in New York, Pakistan faltered in their chase of a modest 120-run target, with their batters facing 59 dot balls and managing only 113 for 7.

“I thought the team required minor surgery to start winning matches but now it appears that we have to go for major surgery,” Mohsin remarked, as quoted by Pakistani media in New York.

Expressing disappointment over recent performances, Mohsin emphasized the necessity of exploring players who have been on the sidelines for some time. He underscored the need to expand the selection pool beyond the current squad.

Mohsin, who assumed the role of PCB chairman in January and later took on the interior minister's position in the government, emphasized that the board had provided ample support to the players. He acknowledged the widespread concern over the team's performance and indicated a comprehensive review would be undertaken.

With Pakistan's hopes of advancing to the Super Eight stage contingent on securing big wins against Canada and Ireland, and relying on results from other matches, Mohsin highlighted the critical nature of upcoming fixtures and the importance of net run-rate calculations.
