Miftah Ismail, Khaqan Abbasi launch ‘Awaam Pakistan’ party

LONDON / KARACHI: On Thursday, the much-anticipated 'Awaam Pakistan' party made its debut on Pakistan's political landscape, ending months of speculation.

A video shared on Awaam Pakistan's X account carried the slogan 'Awaam Pakistan: Badlein ge nizam' (People of Pakistan: We will change the system). The footage featured disheartened citizens raising concerns about pressing national issues such as inflation, energy shortages, corruption, unemployment, and insufficient educational facilities for girls.

Former Finance Minister Miftah Ismail and ex-Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi reposted the video, signaling their association with the new political entity. Both leaders, along with former PPP senator Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, have been instrumental in shaping the party's foundation, following their departure from their respective parties over policy disagreements between 2022 and 2023.

Under the banner of 'Reimagining Pakistan', Abbasi, identified as the convener of Awaam Pakistan's organizing committee, and Ismail, serving as his deputy, convened nationwide seminars throughout 2023 to address the country's challenges.

While Mr. Khokhar's involvement with the group has ceased due to his desire to await the Islamabad High Court's ruling on the NA-47 Islamabad election outcome, other members have favored a prompt launch.

Speaking to Dawn, Mr. Ismail emphasized the party's openness to non-traditional political figures, highlighting their aim to empower ordinary Pakistanis in political discourse. He underscored the inclusion of professionals and experts alongside former PML-N stalwarts and regional leaders in the party's organizational structure.

According to Mr. Abbasi, Awaam Pakistan will officially launch on July 6 or 7, featuring 17 founding members committed to addressing the nation's concerns through collaborative efforts. He stressed the party's adherence to constitutional principles in its dealings with national institutions, asserting a commitment to transparent and accountable governance.
